Today I’m Making – Lurgy blanket (no-sew blanket update)

I have the galloping lurgy. I’ve had it since Monday and I’m hoping this is my last day of it because frankly I’m fed up with not being able to do anything.  Everything I do totally wipes me out including standing up long enough to make a Lemsip.

I know I’m really ill when I can’t even concentrate on knitting. I’ve been up since six today (its nearly half ten now) and I’ve managed to knit 2 rows. (About 120 stitches).

I have far too many projects on the go at once but I like working on whatever I’m in the mood for so today’s project is my lurgy blanket.  Its a big lap blanket for when you’re not feeling well or just need a big snuggle.  I’m making it predominantly in white DK with scraps of grey DK so it will take quite a long time to finish because it does really depend on me knitting grey things and not using up all the yarn.  I’ve written about this blanket before, so this post is really an update on my No-Sew Blanket post from  a year ago.

Yeah so no great progress…. I’ve added probably a couple of squares since then so this could take a while.  Let’s set a deadline of finishing sometime in my lifetime. A literal deadline.

Today I’m Making… No sewing blanket

I like knitted patchwork lap blankets a lot, they are really nice to make and are great for using up all your odds and ends but good grief the sewing up is hellish.  Even if you crochet the squares together there are an awful lot of ends to deal with and if you get the tension wrong on one square you get puffs and dips and then you’re never happy with it.

Like most knitters I have a few stitch directory books and a couple specifically for making blanket squares. I really liked this method of decreasing down the middle to create a square, then I realised you could very easily pick up the stitches for the next square along the edge of the last one.  Voila, no sewing apart from losing the ends and if you’re better than me at knitting them in as you go you wouldn’t need to do any sewing at all.

This blanket is going to take me months if not years to finish because I’m doing it all in white and grey and I’m using scraps of grey rather than buying a whole ball of one shade so that there is some change of tone rather than colour.

I’m adding the squares randomly and I’m in no rush to finish it but so far it’s this big:

Which is not quite long enough for my legs which means it probably needs to be about half as long again really.  I say long, I haven’t decided yet which way is up.

Today I’m Making – 10 stitch blanket by Frankie Brown

Today I’m trying to make a bit of progress with this knitted blanket I started god knows how long ago. Its a fantastic free pattern by someone called Frankie Brown that I found online somehow or other. There’s a link to it at the bottom.

So, this will never end up in my Etsy shop but its basically a blanket you knit round and round working out from the middle that makes a huge square.  It uses short row shaping for the corners like you might have used for turning a sock heel or some such.  Then you knit straight and pick up a stitch from the edge of one of the previous rounds as you go so there’s no sewing up to do. I’m really off sewing up.

The yarn is another vintage one that I picked up at a stash sale at my local knitting group.  I was using this to make leaf bunting but then got sick of it and decided to use it to make this blanket instead, I think its more of a 3 ply than anything, bit too thin to make snoods with which is a shame because its gorgeous.

I’ve lost track of which is the right side but I don’t really care.

wpid-20150215_163453.jpg That there is my favourite handbag and a bag full of neglected knitting projects, none of which are from the huge book I bought from Sarah Crawford herself at Unravel last year that came in that bag.

If you fancy having a go at doing it yourself the pattern is online here: I’ve copied out the corner bit into my Pink Book of patterns and ideas because I’m sick of the screen on my phone timing out when I’m in the middle of it.
